Zangdok Palri – the Glorious Copper-Colored Mountain, the Pure Land of Guru Padmasambhava – is one of the most sacred visionary realms in the Vajrayana tradition. At the heart of this Pure Land stands the Lotus Light Palace, where Guru Rinpoche abides amid an immeasurable assembly of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, yidam deities, Dakas, Dakinis, Vidyadharas, and lineage masters.

Traditional descriptions present Zangdok Palri as a pure, luminous, wondrous, peaceful and blissful realm – an expression of Guru Rinpoche’s awakened wisdom, compassion and enlightened activity.

THE PURE LAND OF ZANGDOK PALRI

Zangdok Palri is described as a vast copper-red mountain, sometimes compared to the color of a ruby, shaped like a heart or an unopened flower bud. It is not merely a mountain in the ordinary sense, but an immense sacred realm, a complete visionary universe.

Its base extends deep into the ocean, into the realm of the Nagas. Its middle regions are the pure lands where Dakas and Dakinis perform enlightened activities and sacred feast offerings. Its summit rises into the celestial realms, and upon that summit stands the Lotus Light Palace, the center of the entire Pure Land.

THE LOTUS LIGHT PALACE AND THE THREE KAYAS

The Lotus Light Palace is expressed through a three-level structure symbolizing the Three Kayas of Buddhahood: Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya and Nirmanakaya.

Upper level – Dharmakaya

The upper level symbolizes the pure realm of the Dharmakaya. It is associated with the primordial Buddha Samantabhadra and the presence of Buddha Amitabha. At this level, the Buddhas are inseparable in awakened nature and transmission is understood as direct mind-to-mind wisdom transmission.

Middle level – Sambhogakaya

The middle level symbolizes the Sambhogakaya, the Body of Enjoyment. Avalokiteshvara, the embodiment of great compassion, abides amid the Five Buddha Families and immeasurable Bodhisattvas. The Dharma is continuously communicated through the symbolic mode of awakened transmission.

Lower level – Nirmanakaya

The lower level symbolizes the Nirmanakaya and is presided over by Guru Rinpoche. He abides amid an assembly of enlightened beings and beings of exceptionally pure karma and abundant merit. According to the current project plan, 16 sacred statues will be enshrined on this Nirmanakaya level.

THE ENLIGHTENED ASSEMBLY OF THE LOTUS LIGHT PALACE

Traditional descriptions of Zangdok Palri portray the main shrine hall of the Lotus Light Palace as a place where enlightened beings gather like clouds. The assembly includes the Five Buddha Families, yidam deities of the nine yanas, the Eight Manifestations of Guru Rinpoche, and masters of different lineages.

The assembly also includes King Trisong Detsen, Guru Rinpoche’s great disciples, the major tertons of Tibet, countless Vidyadharas of India and Tibet, and accomplished scholars and practitioners. In the traditional imagery, the Vidyadharas sit to Guru Rinpoche’s right, absorbed in vajra luminosity, while the great scholars and panditas sit to his left, continuously proclaiming the Dharma.

Throughout the inner and outer galleries of the palace, Dakas and Dakinis are envisioned in abundance. Their sacred songs, dances and feast offerings express the spontaneous and unobstructed enlightened activity of the Pure Land.

DUNDUL RAPTENLING MONASTERY

The Lotus Light Palace is being built at Dundul Raptenling Monastery in Odisha, India. Dundul Raptenling belongs to the Nyingma tradition and the Dudjom Tersar lineage. It was founded by His Holiness Kyabje Dudjom Jigdrel Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche, and construction of the monastery began in 1961.

After many years of development, the monastery was completed around 1978. In February 1979, His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited Dundul Raptenling and performed its consecration and inauguration. For more than six decades, the monastery has continued to serve as an important center for study and practice within the Nyingma – Dudjom Tersar tradition in India.

Today, Lama Sonam Tashi Rinpoche serves as the Head of Dundul Raptenling Monastery. Approximately 130 monks currently live, study and practice there.

THE FORMATION OF THE ZANGDOK PALRI PROJECT

The project to establish the Lotus Light Palace at Dundul Raptenling arose from the aspiration to create a living representation of Guru Rinpoche’s Pure Land at a center of Dudjom Tersar study and practice. According to project materials, the establishment of Zangdok Palri is connected with the vision and aspiration of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche II, while the architectural design received the approval of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche III.

The project is currently led and coordinated by Lama Sonam Tashi Rinpoche. On March 3, 2017, the first puja was performed on the construction site, formally marking the beginning of the Zangdok Palri project at Dundul Raptenling.

PROJECT SCALE

The overall project is being developed on approximately 7 acres of land, or about 2.83 hectares. The site includes the Zangdok Palri – Lotus Light Palace building, classrooms and educational spaces, hostel facilities for monastic students, gardens and supporting structures.

The Zangdok Palri Monastery building itself covers approximately 9,852 square feet, or about 915 square meters. Once completed, the palace is intended to accommodate major Dharma gatherings and large-scale study and practice activities, while serving monks and practitioners from many places.

The interior is being developed with detailed sacred art, shrine installations and Buddhist decorative work. Architectural and symbolic elements are intended to reflect the traditional descriptions of Zangdok Palri as closely as possible within the physical structure.

CURRENT PROGRESS

According to the latest information provided directly by Lama Sonam Tashi Rinpoche, the project is now approximately 80% complete and has entered the finishing stage. Current work focuses on interior and exterior finishing, sacred Buddhist artwork, statue and shrine installations, practice spaces, and the overall landscaping of the compound.

The inauguration of Zangdok Palri is expected to take place in early 2028.

REJOICING AND SUPPORT FROM DUDJOM TERSAR LINEAGE HOLDERS

The Zangdok Palri project at Dundul Raptenling has received expressions of rejoicing and spiritual support from holders of the Dudjom Tersar lineage. In a letter written in the Wood Sheep year, 2015, His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche III, Sangye Pema Shepa, recalled that Dundul Raptenling was founded by His Holiness Dudjom Jigdrel Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche and acknowledged Lama Sonam Tashi Rinpoche’s plan to build an authentic Zangdok Palri there for the benefit of the Buddha Dharma and sentient beings.

His Holiness Dungse Garab Dorje Rinpoche likewise expressed heartfelt appreciation for the project, describing the construction of Zangdok Palri as a continuation and development of the monastery established by the previous master of the lineage. These letters are important historical records showing that the project is not only an architectural undertaking but is also connected with the continuity of the Dudjom Tersar lineage and its aspirations at Dundul Raptenling.

A SACRED ENVIRONMENT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

When completed, the Lotus Light Palace – Zangdok Palri will serve both as a place of devotion and as a space for Dharma study, meditation, practice, ceremonies and monastic activities. It will also offer a tangible sacred representation through which practitioners can contemplate the Glorious Copper-Colored Mountain, the Pure Land of Guru Padmasambhava.

In Vajrayana tradition, contact with the images, symbols and environment of a Pure Land is not understood merely in aesthetic or architectural terms. Such forms can function as supports for recollection, devotion, mindfulness and connection with the awakened qualities embodied in the lineage.

From the founding of Dundul Raptenling by His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche more than six decades ago to the present construction of Zangdok Palri, the monastery continues to preserve and transmit the heritage of the Nyingma – Dudjom Tersar tradition. The Lotus Light Palace is part of that continuity, linking the history of the monastery, the Dudjom lineage and the Pure Land of Guru Rinpoche in a sacred environment for present and future generations.
