Chöd Drum (Damaru)

The Chöd drum (damaru) is used in the practice of Chöd, a path of meditation centered on detachment and direct awareness of mind.

In this practice, the sound of the drum is not understood as music. It is used as a support for contemplation and inner practice, helping the practitioner return again and again to present awareness.

The sound arises and disappears immediately. It cannot be held or grasped. Because of this, it directly reflects impermanence within experience itself. Through this, the practitioner is reminded that all phenomena are constantly changing and have no fixed essence.

In Chöd practice, the sound of the drum is also used as a form of offering, and as a method of supporting awareness beyond attachment and conceptual thinking.

In this way, the drum becomes a direct reminder of impermanence—not as an idea, but as something that can be observed in the very moment sound appears and dissolves.
