In Tibetan Buddhism, the “bumpa”—a purification vessel containing sacred water, blessed through chanting and visualization—is endowed with the following powers: 1/ It is the water of wisdom, helping to purify and remove obstacles in the practice space; 2/ It symbolizes the nectar of the Buddhas, bestowing good fortune, longevity, merit, and auspiciousness.

The mouth of the vase resembles a blooming lotus, symbolizing a pure mind; the round, bulging body symbolizes compassion; and the water inside is the nectar of wisdom.

The ritual of purifying Sang, Sur, and offerings.

TYPES OF VASES:

In the Nyingma tradition, there are two types of vessels:

The left bumpa is called the Pure Water Vase, a vessel without a spout, containing pure water (offering water).

Bumpa, also known as the Nectar Vase, is a vessel with a long spout containing blessed water ; it purifies offerings, sprinkles water during initiation ceremonies, and bestows blessings and power.

USE:

Prepare clean water and mix it with saffron or bumzay (a special ingredient used for making purification water).
Place the vase in front of the Buddha statue or deity you are practicing with (if you have one vase), or on either side of the Buddha statue or deity (if you are using two vases).

The Tibetan Bumpa, or purification vase, is an important ritual object in Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism. It is used to hold pure water or blessed nectar water that has been consecrated through mantra recitation, visualization, and ritual practice.

In Vajrayana practice, the water contained in the Bumpa is not regarded as ordinary water. It is visualized as wisdom nectar flowing from the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Yidams, and lineage masters. The form of the Bumpa carries deep symbolic meaning:

In the Nyingma tradition and other Tibetan Vajrayana practices, the Bumpa is commonly used in:

• Obstacle-clearing practices and protector rituals

🔸 Two Types of Bumpa in the Nyingma Tradition

In the Nyingma tradition, two types of Bumpa are commonly used:

1. Purification Water Vase
This vase has no long spout and is usually placed on the left side. It contains pure water used as an offering and as a symbol of purity.

2. Nectar Vase
This vase has a long spout and is usually placed on the right side. It contains blessed nectar water used for purifying offerings, sprinkling during empowerment rituals, consecrating objects, and bestowing blessings.

If only one vase is used, it may be placed in front of the Buddha image, Yidam image, or one’s practice shrine. If two vases are used, they may be placed on both sides of the Buddha or Yidam according to tradition.

🔸 How to Prepare and Use

Before use, clean water may be prepared and mixed with a small amount of saffron or bumzay, a traditional sacred substance used for preparing purification water in Vajrayana rituals.

After the water is placed in the vase, the practitioner may bless it through mantra recitation, visualization, and the relevant practice liturgy, or use it under the guidance of a qualified teacher.

The Bumpa should be kept in a clean, elevated, and respectful place, such as a shrine or Dharma practice space. Avoid placing it in low, unclean, damp, or disrespectful locations, or mixing it casually with ordinary objects.
